The Italian and English language VESUVIUS 2000 brochure was produced for the purpose of familiarizing the population and authorities of the Vesuvius area with the central issues associated with the risk and how the VESUVIUS 2000 project intends to develop volcanic risk reduction guidelines for the territory. This brochure has been distributed to many people in the Vesuvius area.
The eruption of Vesuvius on August 24, A.D. 79, produced a catastrophe in the Vesuvius area. As a Roman general and admiral of its fleet stationed in Misenum (Miseno today) near Naples, Pliny embarked on August 24, 79, from Miseno to the shores of Vesuvius to help the population from the erupting volcano. He did not, however, succeed in this endeavor and lost his life in Stabiae (Castellammare di Stabia today). We owe to his nephew, Pliny the younger, the description of the first volcanic eruption and a description of his uncle's death.
The supporters of VESUVIUS 2000 took advantage of the anniversary of the great eruption of Vesuvius by reminding the population of the impending danger of the volcano by retracing the voyage of Pliny. For this purpose, a boat named "Giobe" departed from Miseno in the morning of August 24, 1995, with supporters of the project, leaders of Phlegrean communities, ordinary citizens, newspaper and television reporters, and "survivals" (paintings of Alfonso Marquez) of the 79 eruption. At Portici (one of the most densely populated towns in the world situated below the volcano), Vesuvius area citizens and representatives from local communities welcomed the boat, and a six-year old girl presented symbolically the objectives of VESUVIUS 2000 to the leaders of local communities. The images illustrated below show a sampling of this event, whereas the publication "VESUVIUS 2000: Project Summary and Field Work" includes details with photographs and newspaper articles.
GVES is actively collaborating with the local population by providing seminar speakers at local schools and public places. Many teachers and middle- and upper-level school children, as well as the ordinary people, have shown an extraordinary interest to confront the Vesuvius problem and are actively participating in promoting the "Vesuvius consciousness". This is an important step forward, because until several years ago this problem was not addressed in the open.

CONTENTS
On December 16, 1631, a subplinian eruption of Vesuvius killed about 10,000 people and destroyed most of the territory surrounding the volcano. On the anniversary of this event in 1995, GVES and University of Naples organized a manifestation in Villa Campolieto in Ercolano where about 500 elementary and high school children and their teachers exhibited their works on Vesuvius (paintings, sculpture, music, recitations).
The following images illustrate some momentos from the manifestation in Villa Campolieto.
Manifestation of Vesuvius Area School Children on December 16, 1996
The anniversary of the eruption of Vesuvius on December 16, 1631, was again remembered in 1996. This time, the gathering was held at Museo Nazionale Ferroviario di Pietrarsa (Portici) where over 1000 students and teachers met to socialize and present their projects on Vesuvius. Some typical moments from this manifestation are reported through the following images.
This manifestation (Vesuvius at School) was also held at Museo Nazionale Ferroviario di Pietrarsa (Portici) because this place could accommodate large crowds and vehicles used to transport students from different parts of the territory. The following images illustrate some works presented at the manifestation as well as a group photo of some of the participants taken in the amphitheater of the museum.
This manifestation "Education for Security Culture" was also held at Museo Nazionale Ferroviario di Pietrarsa (Portici). More than 1000 students and teachers from Vesuvius area schools attended, including the preschoolers. The morning program included exhibitions of works from Vesuvius area schools and video presentations (Encounter with Vesuvius, The Planet's Volcanoes, Le Vesuve). The afternoon program involved public seminars where about 100 school teachers and scientists participated.
In order to make the manifestation as educational as possible, the children were asked to compile a questionnaire whose answers could be found by studying the expository material. The participants were very enthusiastic with this idea and we will reward prices to the first three best-compiled questionnaires. These questions were:
Se solo inizio a pensare (When only I begin to think)
che un giorno potrai scoppiare (that only day you will explode)
portandoci via come il mare (taking us away like the sea)
non sapendo piu' cosa fare (not knowing what to do)
sarei costretta a naufragare. (I will be forced to shipwreck.)
Al mattino quando io sono sveglia (In the morning when I am awake)
ti vedo sonnecchiare (I see you taking a nap)
e penso che un giorno (and think that one day)
svegliandoti ci farai tutti crollare. (when you awake all as will fall.)
Dove andremo (Where will we go)
come faremo (how will we do it)
mai piu' torneremo (will we ever return)
la nostra citta' (to our city)
un cimitiero diventera'. (becoming a cemetery.)
Ma comunque la vita continuera' (But the life will continue)
e lui immenso e potente dominera'. (and he immense and powerful will dominate.)
Students of 2F (1996), S.M.S. D. Colamarino (Torre del Greco);
lead teacher Rosi Linda.
Com'e' difficile andar via (How's difficult to go away)
quando il Vesuvio eruttera' (when Vesuvio erupts)
e non ci son vie d'uscite (because there are no escape routes)
per salvar le nostre vite (to save our lives)
a cui nessun vuol pensar ... (for which nobody wants to think ...)
E un'eruzione ci sara' (And there will be an eruption)
dopo tanti anni di silenzio (after many years of silence)
e non si sa quando avverra' (and nobody knows when)
e quante vite uccidera' (and how many will be killed)
perche' la lava scendera' (because the lava will descend)
e il nostro sole morira' (and our sun will die)
e tutti noi saremo li' (and all of us will be there)
a tentare di fuggire via di qui' ... (trying to escape away from here...)
perche' la vita a questa eta' (because the life at this age)
e' proprio tutto o sara' niente (is all or will be nothing)
ed io non mi rassegnero' (and I will not resign)
e a morir proprio ora (and dying right now)
non ci sto'. (will not accept.)

The enclosed song VESUVIUS 2000 Part a and Part b was produced in 1996 by the students of S.M.S. Rocco Scotellaro (Ercolano) in honor of the VESUVIUS 2000 initiative. Lead teacher Gianfranco Gambardella.
English translation produced by the children is:
A green spot this mountain looks like
But inside it burning flames abide
A strange condition however it presents
The fact that people live on its rocks. It's all an awe, a fear and a fright
A dreadful story from morning till night
What it the use of lucky episodes
It suddenly the powder-keg explodes ...A thousand narrow streets are at your foot
That would like you in their dreams to appear
Before tomorrow you wake up and stir
And this dream one often has indeed! The black thought comes up in the night ...
Why don't you spare us your salute at last?
My darling, should we pay such a tribute
To die thousands of times every minute?
Signed:
Students of the S.M.S. R. Scotellaro of Herculaneum we are
And on the volcano we are sitting
what can we do? then, we think
A glance ...! A word ...!
No, we study
It's life we learn
And with learning, perhaps
We protect ourselves.
That's why.
Il Vesuvio e' come una palla (Vesuvius is like a ball)
che ha tempo per scoppiare. (which has time to explode.)
E' un rischio abitare (It is a risk to live)
sotto i suoi piedi. (under its feet.)
Un giorno o un altro (One of these days)
lui scoppiera' di rabbia (it will explode from anger)
e cacciera' fuori tutta (and throw out all)
la sua lava. (of its lava.)
La gente correra' sempre di piu' (The people will try to run)
ma la lava scorrera' sempre (but the lava will always)
piu' avanti. (be ahead.)
Dobbiamo fare in modo (We must prevent)
che il Vesuvio non scoppi perche' (Vesuvius from exploding because)
sarebbe la fine di (it would be the end)
tutti noi e della citta. (of all of us and our cities.)
Pero' noi siamo al sicuro (At least for now)
per il momento. (we are safe.)

Il Vesuvio ... tanto maestoso quanto pericoloso.
(Vesuvius ... so majestic but so dangerous.)

(I would like to cut it in small pieces and transfer it there)
dove non puo' nuocere. Ma non vorrei farlo
(where it could not be harmful. But I would not like)
scomparire, poiche' e' una parte di noi
(that it disappears, because it is a part of us)
e se non ci fosse piu', gran parte della nostra storia
(and if it would not exist anymore, a large part of our history)
andrebbe in fumo.
(would wind up in smoke.)
